Victron Inverters Inverters convert the Direct Voltage and Direct Current from the battery + &. - terminals. Alternating Voltage and Alternating Current and steps the voltage up to the nominal mains supply value, which in Australia is 230 - 240 V. AC. The wave form, or the shape of the wave is that of a " sine wave" , a natural phenomenon when an armature is rotated / spinning within a magnetic field , as in the case of an alternator. An Inverter can also be described as a "static converter" because there are no moving parts except for the sub atomic particles , electrons . Victron Inverter Chargers An inverter / charger combines the function of an inverter OR a charger BUT cannot perform both functions simultaneously. This is because much of the internal circuitry is co-incident , particularly the M.O.S.F.E.T Power switching module, which is either a sine wave current amplifier in INVERTER mode, or a BRIDGE RECTIFIER in battery charger mode. Another critically important part of an inverter / charger is the Automatic Transfer Switch, (A.T.S) which switches the appliance load between the output of the inverter and the backup petrol or diesel generating set. It is vital that this figure, in AMPS Is appropriately specified. It is the final figure in the product description code. Victron inverter / chargers also feature "POWER ASSIST" function when in inverter mode, such that it may synchronise and combine its output with the backup generating set. A number of inverter / chargers may also be connected in parallel for increased output and even in THREE PHASE configuration ( Master + two slaves ) Reflecting these attributes are the PHOENIX inverters and MULTI-PLUS inverter / chargers with their clean , heavy duty aluminium plate construction and logical and functional layout. These are fully marine grade appliances by the way; resistant to corrosion and moisture laden environments.

inverter-internals Behold the internal construction of the very popular PHOENIX 3000 watt inverter. At the front is the microprocessor and control board. This generates the 50 hertz frequency time base and synthesises the sinusoidal wave form which is then applied to the power switching module attached to the large silver, vertical heat sink at the centre of the unit. The power switching module and the high efficiency Metal Oxide Silicon Field Effect Transistors ( M.O.S.F.E.T.S ) are the secret to the incredible electrical efficiency of the VICTRON inverters, in excess of 90% DC to AC conversion efficiency. So what is actually transpiring is that a small , perfectly formed sine wave , is being generated on the control board and then amplified and injected into the control terminals of the M.O.S.F.E.T,s which constitute the power switching module, which then applies This heavily amplified signal or wave form, into the primary windings of the two Toroidal, donut shaped, step up transformers which can be seen on either side of the top of the unit. Toroidal transformers are again chosen for the VICTRON inverters, because of their ultimate efficiency . Twin transformers are used instead of a one to deliver superior cooling effect and result in a more compact construction. The transformers, apart from stepping up the battery voltage to the normally required 240 V, also yield an impressive 200 to 300% surge power rating. This is because of the magnetic energy, known as "magnetic flux", stored within the laminated steel core of the transformers. The transformers do in actual fact perform the function of a magnetic flywheel, particularly important when operating electric motors and pumps and other "inductive"appliances or loads.
